Hey! It's Hannah here. =) After seeing some pretty outrageous names for cats (None of them from COJF. =) ) , I have decided to make a guide to naming your cat. In this guide, we will be covering basic naming guidelines. The guide will have name suggestions as well as examples. Enjoy!
NOTE: All names used for examples I HAVE seen in places. Feel free to laugh. =)
The Prefix
A prefix, as you should know, is the thing that comes BEFORE a word. Pre fix. As in PRE fixing something. Before. Don't forget it. ;)
So, in a warrior's name, there is the first word, and the second word. Right now, we will be focusing on the first. So, we are going to make up a kit. It will be male. Our little male kit is a skinny brown kitten with white toes. Now, the first thing to remember when naming your kit is to look through the mother's eyes. Is she going to know if he's fast or if he's the most evil cat in the whole forest? No. So, the prefix is going to be based off of what she sees. Maybe he's the biggest cat in the litter. Maybe he's the only white one. She also isn't going to know of certain words, like aqua, or titan. Yes, believe it or not, I've seen a cat in roleplay named Titanwrath. It was very annoying. Just. Don't. Do. It. Now for our kit. He's brown, so we could choose many names, like Brownkit, Mousekit, Mudkit, ETC. We're going to be simplistic and name him Brownkit. Here are some acceptable names for your kits.
Basic Colors Amber- For a cat whose pelt is dominated by a golden-brown color. Ash- A variation of grey; more smokey colored. Auburn- For a cat whose pelt is dominated by a dark, brown color with a tint of red. Black- For a cat whose pelt is dominated by the color black. Brown- For a cat whose pelt is dominated by the color brown. Coal- Another variation of grey. This is more for a cat with a darker grey color. Cream- For a cat whose pelt is dominated by a creamy, light brown color. Ginger- For a cat whose pelt is dominated by an orange or orangish-yellow color. Grey/Gray- For a cat whose pelt is dominated by the color grey. Hazel- Another variation of a brown cat. Most likely a lighter brown. Pale- Possibly used for a cat that is the spitting image of another, only more pale. Also for a cat that is more pale than most. Red- Although cats are not born with red fur, this prefix can be used for cats with an orange pelt. Russet- Another variation of Ginger or Red. Used on cats with orange colored fur. Silver- Another variation of grey. Most likely used for a cat with shiny grey fur. Tawny- For a cat whose pelt is dominated by a light, pale brown color. White- For a cat whose pelt is dominated by white. Yellow- For a cat whose pelt is dominated by a yellowish color, maybe slightly orange.
Basic Patterns Brindle- A cat with stripes, or a brindle pattern. Dapple(d)- For a cat with spots. Could be calico ore tortie. Maybe even black with white spots. It's up to you. Mottled- Another variation of Dapple(d). Seeing as how mottled is used for colorful things, I'd stick to calico or tortie cats with this one. Speckle(d)- See Dapple(d) Spotted See Dapple(d)
Animals
NOTE: I may not have explanations for some of these. If you have an explanation you'd like me to put up here, please send me (kittysrok) a message. Thanks! Adder- Badger- Dove- Maybe for a cat with a silvery-white colored pelt. Might look delicate to the mother. Fish- This cat could be named either on apperance or activity level. Apperance would be a cat with shiny grey fur. Activity level might be that the kit was very wiggly and moved a lot on the day of it's birth. Fox- I feel the cat with the prefix 'Fox' would be an orange color. Frog- Hawk- Jay- Most likely for a darker cat. Not black, but maybe a dark grey tabby. Kesteral- Minnow- I see this cat as being a silvery grey. Mole- I see Mole as being a dark grey to black cat. Moth- Seeing as how a lot of moths are brownish, i think this cat should be brown. Mouse- A light brown cat. Owl- Raven- I feel the only color for the name Raven would have to be black. Rabbit- This would be for a brown cat. I don't think it matters whether it is light or dark. Shrew- I think a dark brown or maybe even black would go well with this prefix. Snake- I think this cat should be dark, and maybe a bit restless when born. Sparrow- I see this name as being a brown cat also. Spider- This cat should be black. Maybe have it have longer legs. Squirrel- This name to me should be brown, but could also be black, as there are black squirrels. But, I think it fits a brown cat better. Vole- For the prefix 'Vole', I feel the cat should have a medium brown colored fur.
Plants
NOTE: I have NO explanations to any of these, for I see no practical reason why these names are chosen. I WILL, however, give my thoughts on what the colors of these cats should be. Alder- Seeing as how the trunk of this tree is a tan color, I think a cat with this name should be either tan or white. Birch- I think this best fits a lightly colored cat. Bracken- This also fits a lightly colored cat. Bramble- Brambles are brown, so brown would be the best choice for this name. I don't think it matters whether it is light or dark. Cherry- Cherries are red, so a cat with this prefix should be more of a reddish-orange color. Daisy- Daisies are white. Cat is also white. Elm- I see this cat as being either brown or white. Fern- Honestly, I don't think there is a color this name specifically calls for. I'd stay away from naming orange cats Fern, though. Grass- Umm, I think Grass is an odd name for a cat, but I put it on here because some people like this as a prefix. As with Fern, I'd stay away from naming orange cats this. Heather- I see this as being a lighter brown cat or a dark grey cat. Holly- I see this prefix as either calico/tortie or black. Ivy- This name screams tan. I have no idea why it does, but It. Just. Does. Lily- See 'Ivy', then add 'Or white'. Maple- I see Maple as being a medium to dark brown cat. Moss- See 'Grass'. Oak- Oak strikes me as a brown cat. Poppy- As with oak, I see this as a brown or tan cat. Sorrel- Light brown to white. Thistle- Brown or Black. Willow- This cat should be anywhere from a darkish brown to a tan color. Possibly long fur to emphasize the fact that willow trees have long branches.
Weather Breeze- I see this as a mostly white cat with some black spots. Cloud- A light grey colored cat. Fog- Also grey. Should be medium to light colored. Frost(ed)- See 'Fog'. Hail- A very light grey cat. Ice- An all-white cat or extremely light grey. Light- I see a yellow to yellow-orange cat for this prefix. Mist(y)- Misty would go great with a cat that is a lighter grey. Rain- Same as 'Misty'. Sky- I think a light cat of any color would be good for this name. Snow- A white colored cat. Storm- I see a cat with a grey pelt. Thunder- I see this as a dark grey cat. Wind-This cat should be a very light grey or cream color.
Others Bark- A dark to medium brown fur color. Branch- See 'Bark'. Cinder- This should be a medium to darkish grey cat. Dust- This cat could be anywhere from a light brown to a very light cream color. Ember- I see this as a darker orange, maybe an auburn color. Fire- This cat should be a bright, firey orange. Honey- This cat could be a yellow cat. It also could be a dusty cream color. Leaf- I see leaf as being the name for a tortie or calico cat. Mud- This cat's color should be a dark, murky brown. Pebble- This cat's name could either be by color or looks. For color, i'd say anywhere from a medium grey to a greyish-brown. For looks, it could be a referance to the size of the kit. Pebbles are small, so i'd use this on the smallest kit in the litter. Sand- This should be used on a darker cream colored cat. Shade- I think any dark color would go great with this name. I'd stay away from oranges, though. Shadow- See 'Shade'. Smoke- This name would best fit a medium to dark grey cat. Stone- The name stone should be used on a cat with any shade of grey. Thorn- I see this name as being strictly for cream colored cats. Rock- Rock should be used on cats with dark grey to black pelts.
NOTE: If you do not see your cat's Prefix on here, DO NOT PANIC! I know I haven't thought of all of the names there are. Please send me (Kittysrok) a message with the cat's name and I will put it up. Thanks!
The Suffix
A suffix, as you should know, is the thing that comes AFTER a word. After. Don't forget it. ;)
We will now be focusing on the SECOND part in your warrior's name. The leader choses the warrior's suffix based off of what they observe. Maybe the cat was extremely fast, so he was given the suffix -flight or -step, symbolizing he's very fast, or quick-footed. Maybe the leader didn't know or observe the cat very well, so he went off of what he saw. Like the suffixes -stripe and -pelt. Either way, it's important to choose your suffix based on the cat's personality or apperance, not potential. So, in essence, choose Amberpelt over Amberfuture (Yes, I've seen that one, too. =/ ) So, back to our little Brownkit. He's lived through his kit phase, now he's an apprentice. He will now be given the suffix -paw. Before, he had the suffix -kit. After he's an apprentice, he will be a warrior. Brownkit was a great fighter, but also helped rescue his friend, Gingerfoot's kits from the river. So the leader might name him Brownheart or Brownclaw. the suffix -heart symbolizing his bravery and selflessness when saving the kits, and the suffix -claw symbolizing his ability to protect his clan. Get it? Good. Now, here are some suffixes your clan leader might use.

Naming No-No's
I've roleplayed warriors since I started the game Neopets in 2004. I was young. Now, I was pretty good at naming cats. Not great, but good. There were days I'd get on and have a blast, and there were those days. You know what I'm talking about. Those days where someone annoys you so much you want to meet them just so you can kick their a- Ehem... I mean, butt. Yes, I have sat in front of my computer screen and yelled at people. Now, back to the point. The way I see it, there are 3 categories; Beautiful Sun, Stars and Moon, The Twoleg Wonders, and The Negative Nellies and Contradicting Carries.
Beautiful Sun, Stars and Moon
Ah, those Star and Moon names. They just bug me. Cats should NOT have these in their names, with the exception of the leader's suffix, and tribe cats. I know some will dissagree with me, but hear me out. Leaders are given the suffix -star because it makes them special. It shows that they have been touched by Starclan. Same with the word 'moon' The Moonpool is the sacred place for the medicine cats to meet, so why would a normal, plain jane clan cat have that word in His or her name? Warriors are special, but not That special.
Examples
Moonflower- AHH! The Dreadful 'Moon!' word!
Starspirit- What happens if this cat becomes leader?! I can see it now. "Oh, Starstar! Badgers are in the camp!". Just plain stupid.
Sunfire- Ok, everybody knows the sun is a blazing ball of fire, there is no need to use it in your name.
The Twoleg Wonders
There are some things the cats don't know about. So, WHY do people use them in their cat's names?! I can see them in kittypet names, as the people name them, but WARRIORS?! There's just no reason for it. *Slap*
Examples
Metalfur- WHAT?! Is this cat a stinking statue? METAL? Really?
Monkeyfoot- There are two things wrong with this name. 1. Unless your cat lives in the tropical rainforests of South America, they shouldn't know about monkeys. 2. Monkeyfoot? That just doesn't make sense. *Headdesk*
The Negative Nellies and Contradicting Carries
Names show what characteristics are most notable about your cat. They're not meant to be insults! PLEASE, for the sake of your poor kitty's feelings, do not insult them through their name!Their name also needs to make sense. There's almost nothing worse than a name that completely contradicts it's self.
Examples
Iceheart- I know ice could be referring to pelt color, but Iceheart? It sounds as if you're telling the cat they're evil or something!
Firemist- Here, let me mist you with this beautiful fire! That makes a LOT of sense! =/
